Oda Iselin Sønderland
Oda Iselin Sønderland (b. 1996, Oslo) is a Norwegian-Irish artist. Sønderland holds a BA in Graphic Design and Illustration from The National Academy of Art in Oslo and graduated with an MA in Painting from The Royal College of Art in London in 2022. Her recent solo exhibitions include Elsker (2024) with Nevven Gallery in Bologna, Breaking the Waves (2023) with Galerie Pangée, in Montreal, Krokus (2022) with Nevven Gallery in Gothenburg and Magical Girl (2019) with Gallery Golsa in Oslo. Sønderland’s recent group shows include Haloscope (2024) with Glasshouse in London, Who is Your Master? (2023) with 1969 Gallery in New York, Body Snatchers (2021) with Like a Little Disaster in Polignano a Mare, Suspended Disbelief (2021) with Arsenal Contemporary in Toronto and Radiant Immensity (2020) with Projet Pangée in Montreal. Sønderland works mainly with watercolour painting and recently sculpture, creating figurative works that draw on personal experiences and elements of stories from Norwegian and other cultures, introducing magical folk creatures and characters with an appearance that alludes to Japanese anime. The artist considers Japanese animator Satoshi Kon to be one of her lasting sources of inspiration.
